Derrick Lewis vs Ciryl Gane Interim Title Bout Announced for UFC 265

Derrick Lewis vs Ciryl Gane Interim UFC Heavyweight Championship UFC 265

In a shock, UFC has announced an interim Heavyweight Championship bout between Derrick Lewis and Ciryl Gane for the main event of UFC 265 PPV.

The shock is due to the fact that Francis Ngannou won the title just three months back at UFC 259. It is an odd move to introduce an interim champion in such short time.

Earlier, Derrick Lewis was expected to challenge Ngannou for the title on the same night. But Ngannou only agreed for a fight in September. UFC 265 will take place on 7 August 2021, likely from Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

Derrick Lewis is getting a title fight on the back of his 4 straight wins. Lewis was named as the next challenger for Ngannou. But he will have to go through another solid opponent to get the title fight.

Ciryl Gane is currently undefeated in his MMA career with six of his wins coming in UFC itself. Gane defeated Alexander Volkov this weekend at UFC Vegas 30 via unanimous decision.

UFC 265 currently has Amanda Nunes vs Julianna Penna Bantamweight title fight in the co-main event. The other confirmed fights for the PPV are – Casey Kenney vs Song Yadong in prelims and Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs Jessica Penne.
