George Kambosos Gets Shocking Win Over Teofimo Lopez to Win Lightweight Titles

Geroge Kambosos Jr. pulls up a great upset by defeating Teofimo Lopez to become the new unified Lightweight champion in boxing.

Teofimo promised that he would knock Geroge out cold in the very first round. He even tried to keep his words by taking the aggressive form. However, Kambosos was the one who managed to connect a monstrous right hand in the first round to knock down Lopez.

Lopez then started respecting Kambosos in the following round but Kambosos kept winning rounds in the first half. Just as Lopez’s corner started worrying about the result, Lopez showed that he is still in the match. He seemed to fight back in the ninth and the tenth round. He even managed to knock down Kambosos in the night round.

Going into the final two rounds, the fight was even poised. But Kambosos once again managed to win those crucial championship rounds and showed terrific offense in the final round.  

In any other location, Kambosos would have been pretty sure of the win. But with the fight on Lopez’s hometown of New York, few expected a split decision in his favor. However, Kambosos got the split decision in his favor with the three judges scoring the bout by 115-112, 113-114 and 115-111.

Kambosos Jr. now holds 3 of the 4 major belts recognized in the boxing world in IBF, WBA and WBO World Lightweight titles, as well as the Lineal Ring Lightweight World title. He has already made stated earlier that he would go after WBC World Lightweight Champion David Haney for a title unification bout if case he wins the title.

Let’s see if that turns out to be the next fight for Kambosos Jr. David Haney defends his title next week against Joseph Diaz.
