David Haney has become the Undisputed Lightweight Champion by defeating Geroge Kambosos Jr. via unanimous decision in the main event of the Top Rank Boxing card

Haney came into the bout as the WBC Lightweight Champion while Kambosos Jr. held the IBF, WBA(Super) and WBO’s 135 lbs titles. Kambosos Jr. had won those titles when he upset Teofimo Lopez Jr. in November last year. However, he was unable to repeat those exploits this time around.

The first round was quite conservative as none of them wanted to make a hasty start. However, early in the second round, Kambosos connected a huge right hand which stunned Haney. Haney recovered from the blow and completely dominated the third round, but Kambosos managed to connect another right hand in the fourth round.

In the next few rounds, David Haney tightened up his defenses which Kambosos failed to penetrate. But Kambosos finally made contact with a flurry of punches in the ending moments of round right. In the last two rounds, Haney found Kambosos’ chin several times and made solid contact with it.

As the results were announced, the referee lifted David Haney’s hand. The unanimous decision scoreline of 116-112, 116-112 & 118-110 show how well Haney dominated Kambosos Jr. Haney is the first boxer to become the undisputed champion in the lightweight division.

Haney signed a rematch clause in his contract for this fight, which will mean that we will soon see Haney vs Kambosos Jr. II. Apart from that, the likes of WBA(regular) Lightweight Champion Gervonta Davis, Ryan Garcia and Vasily Lomachenko would be waiting to challenge him further down the line.

Keep tuned in for more news and updates from the boxing world.
