AEW World Championship Unification match will take place earlier than expected.

AEW has announced that AEW World Champion CM Punk will face interim champion Jon Moxley in a title unification match at the AEW Dynamite episode on August 24, 2022.

CM Punk was sidelined with an injury just three days after he won the world title at AEW Double or Nothing 2022 PPV. Punk suffered a foot injury during a tag team match on Dynamite episode of June 1, 2022. He underwent surgery and only returned last week on Dynamite.

Jon Moxley won the interim AEW World Title Tournament by defeating Hiroshi Tanahashi at Forbidden Door PPV. He has since defended the interim title against the likes of Brody King and Chris Jericho. After he defeated Jericho last week, Jericho Appreciation Society attacked Moxley. A returning Punk then made the save before having a face off with Moxley.

Punk opened this week’s Dynamite episode and teased a heel turn. First, he took shots at Hangman Adam Page before mocking Eddie Kingston and then Jon Moxley. He called Moxley the third best wrestler in his own group(referencing The Shield) and called himself the real champion. Moxley then came out and said his interim title was worth nothing for him until he defeated Punk, who is holding the main title.

Punk even said that they will face off at All Out before a brawl broke out between them. The security had a hard time keeping them separated though. Later in the show, Moxley attacked Tony Nese as he was coming out for his match. Moxley himself went to the ring and called out Punk again. Punk came out but once again the security stopped them from brawling.

Other members of Blackpool Combat Club, Claudio Castagnoli and Wheeler Yuta also came out to try to calm down Moxley who left through the crowd. AEW later announced that the title unification match will take place next week on Dynamite. With just two weeks left for All Out 2022, it now remains unclear who will be the challenger for the unified World Champion.

AEW Dynamite episode of August 24, 2022, will air from Wolstein Center in Cincinatti, OH.
