UFC 274 was earlier rumored to be taking place in Brazil on May 7. However, on March 5, 2022, UFC announced Footprint Center in Pheonix, AZ as the confirmed location.
On January 26, 2022, UFC President Dana White confirmed to ESPN that Charles Oliveira would defend Lightweight Championship against Justin Gaethje at the event.[details] The match was promoted to the main event after Glover Teixeira vs Jiri Prochazka match was shifted to UFC 275. At weigh-in(on May 6, 2022), Charles Oliviera missed weight by 0.5 lbs. He was stripped of the title which will be on the line only for Justin Gaethje.
On March 16, 2022, Sports Illustrated reported that Rose Namajunas vs Carla Esparza match would occur at this event with women’s strawweight title on the line. This is their second clash, coming 7 years after the inaugural UFC strawweight title match between them in 2015.[details]
In February 2022, Michael Chandler told in an interview that he is preparing for a fight against Tony Ferguson in the summer. On March 10, 2022, Sports Illustrated’s Justin Barrasso confirmed that Chandler vs Ferguson is booked for UFC 274. UFC confirmed the bout two days later.
