Preview

On January 15, 2022, Joe Smith Jr will be in action as he defends his WBO Light Heavyweight Championship for the first against Steve Geffrard.

Smith Jr was supposed to defend his title against Umar Salamov in October 2021, but the bout was postponed due to Smith Jr.’s COVID-19 diagnosis. Salamov then moved on to challenge Dmitry Bivol after visa issues in US.

Callum Johnson emerged as the challenger for Smith, but he contracted COVID-19 just 8 days before the fight. Geffrard, who was preparing for a bout on the same day, accepted the short-notice title bout.

Smith defeated Jesse Hart and Eleider Álvarez coming off a loss against Artur Beterbiev. He then defeated Maxim Vlasov in the bout where he won the vacant WBO Light Heavyweight title.

On the other hand, Geffrard is on an 18 fight winning streak with 12 TKOs. While Geffrard might not be an ideal challenger, he is the best possible man available on 8 days notice.
