Injured Errol Spence Out of Pacquiao Fight, Yordenis Ugas Replaces Him

Errol Spence Jr. had to pull out of the fight against Manny Pacquiao which was scheduled for 21 August, PBC has announced.

Spence(27-0) has reportedly suffered a torn retina in his left eye. A routine pre-fight eye exam, which was ordered by the Nevada Athletic Commission, revealed Spence’s eye injury. The Unified WBA & IBC Welterweight Champion has returned home to Dallas where he will undergo surgery.

Errol Spence has shared(via PBC press release) that he is disappointed that the fight against Pacquiao will not go ahead. He added that he was not in a condition to take part in the fight with his eyes in that state. Spence has also assured the fans that he would come back from this injury.

“You know I’ll be back as soon back soon. We’ve come back from worse.”

Manny Pacquiao has also expressed relief that Spence’s eye injury was revealed in the physical examination.

Pacquiao will now go ahead to face WBA Super Welterweight Champion Yordenis Ugas in another title fight. Ugas was earlier scheduled to fight Fabian Maidana on the undercard of the same event. Maidana also withdrew from the fight on Monday after suffering an injury during his sparring session.

Ugas won the regular WBA Welterweight title in September 2020 by defeating Abel Ramos. The former Olympics Bronze Medalist was elevated from regular to super Welterweight title in January. Earlier, defeated Keith Thuram to win the super WBA title back in July 2019. He was stripped of the title due to inactivity.

“It’s an honor to fight the great multiple division world champion, Manny Pacquiao, as I am more than ready to take on this challenge,’’ Ugas said. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for Pacquiao, but I am coming to win this fight. I’ve been in camp working hard with my coach Ismael Salas and I know together we will come up with a masterful game plan to combat anything Manny will bring to the ring. I wish Errol Spence Jr. a speedy recovery and I want to ensure the fans that I will be at my best for this fight.”

Errol Spence Jr. has taken to Twitter to reassure fans that he has come back from worse injuries. He also expressed that he might return to face the winner of the Pacquiao vs Ugas fight.
