The reigning champion is coming off wins against Andy Ruiz Jr. and Kubrat Pulev in his only fights in the last two years. He won the title back from Ruiz, the only man to defeat him in pro-career, in December 2019 with a unanimous decision from judges. He later dispatched Pulev via knockout in the ninth round in December 2020.
For the unknown, his opponent is also not a pushover by any means. Still undefeated, Oleksandr Usyk is a former four-belt Cruiserweight Champion. He moved to the Heavyweight division in 2019 and has had defeated Chazz Witherspoon and Derek Chisora in the division till now. Usyk is also ranked higher than Joshua in many Pound for Pound Rankings. Although, Usyk became the mandatory WBA Super title challenger when he moved to the Heavyweight division from being the Cruiserweight champion.
However, this was still not the fight that Joshua was gunning for. He was actually aiming for a champion vs champion fight against WBC and The Ring Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury. But a contract situation forced Fury towards a rematch with Deontay Wilder which will take place on 9 October now.
With the Fury fight getting delayed, Joshua agreed to fight his mandatory title contender Oleksandr Usyk and it was announced for 25 September.
