Deontay Wilder was the reigning WBC World Heavyweight Champion when he first face Fury in December 2018. That match ended in a split decision draw with each judge scoring the bout differently. Both fighters claimed that they had done enough to win the match.
A rematch was announced a year after this fight and took place in February 2020. This time, Fury knocked down Wilder three times and earned a seventh-round stoppage to win the WBC and The Ring Lineal Heavyweight titles.
The third fight between them was initially announced for July 18, 2020, but the COVID-19 pandemic and Wilder’s recovery after surgery pushed it further. Fury then started to look for a fight against WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, & IBO Heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua which would have crowned an undisputed World Champion. However, Wilder started legal proceedings and got the decision in his favour, forcing a trilogy fight.
The fight was first scheduled for July 24, but it had to be moved to October 9 after Fury was found positive for COVID-19.
