Sports Illustrated reported the story that AEW is staying true to their commitment to taking the win-loss record being of importance. Cody Rhodes has been undefeated in the singles matches till now. First, he defeated his half brother Dustin Rhodes at AEW Double or Nothing, followed by a time-draw against Darby Allin at Fyter Fest and then he once again took the win over Shawn Spears at All Out.

Hence, as per the report from SI, the combination of wins and quality of opponents, similar to the strength of schedule format applied in college football, has propelled Rhodes to an AEW World Championship title match against Chris Jericho. SI also quoted AEW President Tony Khan who repeated AEW’s commitment to win-loss record being of importance.

Cody’s outstanding record in singles competition has secured him the number one contender ranking, and he will be challenging AEW world champion Chris Jericho in the first-ever PPV defense of the championship on November 9 in Baltimore at Full Gear. Cody earned this opportunity over the summer as he remained unbeaten in singles bouts, scoring pins on a pair of proven veterans, defeating his older brother, the legendary wrestler Dustin Rhodes at Double or Nothing, and beating bitter rival and former partner Shawn Spears at All Out—and battling to a draw with the exciting upstart Darby Allin at Fyter Fest. This is an AEW world championship match that so many All Elite Wrestling fans are excited to witness, and I’m glad we’ll be able to present it at Full Gear.

After defeating Kenny Omega at AEW Double or Nothing, Chris Jericho went on to become the first AEW World Champion in a match against Adam “Hangman” Page. Since then, he has been in the news for different news. First, his post-match rant after All Out went viral, turning into remixed song, a t-shirt and lots of memes. Later, he also made headline after losing the AEW title belt in Tallahassee, Florida.

Interestingly, this would be Jericho’s second AEW World Title defense. AEW previously announced that Jericho will defend the title for the first time at 16 October episode of AEW TV show from Philadelphia. Jericho’s opponent for that match is still to be named. We wonder who will the opponent be, considering AEW’s commitment towards the win-loss record.

AEW Full Gear 2019 PPV takes place on November 9 at Royal Farms Arena in Baltimore, MD. The tickets will go on sale later today at 12 PM EST/9 AM PST. Below are the matches announced for the show till now:

  • Chris Jericho(c) vs Cody Rhodes – AEW World Championship Match
