WWE has announced the date and location for Money in the Bank 2023 PLE event.
For the first time in its history, Money in the Bank event will take place in UK. London’s O2 Arena will host the event on July 1, 2023.
This will also be the first WWE PLE/PPV event to take place in London since SummerSlam 1992. Last year, WWE presented Clash at the Castle event from Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, UK, which was the first event since SummerSlam to be take place in UK since SummerSlam 1992.
Money in the Bank event holds men and women Money in the Bank Ladder matches. The winner gets MITB briefcases which can be cashed in for World Title shot at any time any place in the next 365 days. Last year’s winner includes were Austin Theory(men’s MITB) and Liv Morgan(women’s MITB).
Morgan went on to cash the briefcase at Money in the Bank 2022 itself on Ronda Rousey to win SmackDown Women’s Championship. Austin Theory’s cash-in against Roman Reigns was stopped a few times at Summerslam and Clash at the Castle. Later, he failed to defeat United States Champion Seth Rollins for United States Championship. Check here for the list of Money in the Bank Winners.
It is believed that the roaring success of Clash at the Castle has motivated WWE to hold more live events in UK. That event drew a $8 million gate, highest for WWE outside of any WrestleMania events. The event also turned out to be the best-selling merchandise event outside WrestleMania along with being the most-watched international PLE/PPV event.
The event might also be shifted to UK to avoid a clash with UFC PPV on that day. It can be expected that UFC will hold their International Fight Week PPV on the same day in Las Vegas, NV. Last year’s Money in the Bank event suffered due to the same clash.
In changing the venue to UK, WWE also ensured an afternoon time slot for the event and has avoided a clash with UFC PPV prelims and main card.
