STORYLINES
Cena vs Orton: John Cena won the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41 night 2 by beating Cody Rhodes. Cena came out on the RAW After WrestleMania episode on April 21, where Orton caught him by surprise with an RKO out of nowhere. Orton also interrupted Cena’s promo on April 25 SmackDown episode where he ended up challenging Cena for a title match at the spot. Cena replied that they would clash instead at Backlash.
Becky vs Lyra: After Bayley was attacked backstage on night 1 of WrestleMania 41 pre-show, WWE Women’s Intercontinental Champion Lyra Valkyrie was left without a partner for the Women’s Tag Team title match the following night against Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez. Becky Lynch made her return to WWE to be the surprise partner for Lyra Valkyrie and the duo ended up winning the titles. The following night on RAW on April 21, Lyra was pinned as she and Becky lost the titles back to Liv and Raquel. After the match, Becky attacked Lyra and hit her with three Manhandle Slams back to back, turning heel in process. The following week, Becky revealed that she was the one who took out Bayley with whom she had a long history and it was due to the same reason that she attacked Lyra also. Lyra interrupted her and challenged her for a match. Becky responded by saying that she would fight Lyra for the Women’s Intercontinental title at Backlash instead.
Gunther vs McAfee: On RAW April 21 episode, Gunther was arguing with commentators Michael Cole and Pat McAfee after their harsh comments for him at WrestleMania. Gunther then attacked Cole but McAfee attacked him in retaliation. Gunther overpowered McAfee and choked him out. Gunther was fined and suspended from WWE. The following week, McAfee asked Nick Aldis, temporary general manager for the night, to lift Gunther’s suspension as he wanted a match against him. Aldis declined and instead proposed a match between them at Backlash.
WWE United States Championship 4-Way Match: Jacob Fatu won WWE United States Championship by beating LA Knight at WrestleMania 41. On the following SmackDown, Knight interrupted Fatu’s promo alongside Solo Sikoa to ask for a rematch. Drew McIntyre also interrupted them which led to a #1 contender match being announced between Knight and McIntyre for later that night. Solo hit Knight with the Samoan Spike during the match but before McIntyre could capitalize, Damian Priest attacked him to cause a DQ win for McIntyre. After Solo was beat up by Knight, Fatu attacked all three of them and hit them with moonsaults. The following week, Knight and Priest got into war of words before clashing in a singles match which was once again interrupted by Solo attacking Knight. Fatu also attacked the duo again when they Knight was looking to put Solo through the announce table. Later that night, SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis informed Fatu and Solo that Fatu would defend his title against Knight and Priest. Solo then pointed out that Fatu should face McIntyre as he won the #1 contender match the previous week. Aldis then amended the match by adding McIntyre to it and make it a fatal 4-way match.
Dominik vs Penta: During the build-up to WrestleMania 41, Dominik Mysterio tried to recruit Penta to Judgment Day faction. However, Penta not only declined his offer, but also hit back at the members of faction. Penta was part of WWE Intercontinental Championship match at WrestleMania 41 along with Judgment Day’s Dominik and Finn Balor against the reigning champion Bron Breakker. Dominik ended up winning the title by pinning Balor. Dominik made his first title defense against Penta on RAW April 21 episode by a returning JD McDonagh(of Judgment Day) cost Penta the match. The following week, Penta cost McDonagh and Carlito a tag team match against The War Raiders. After Penta defeated McDonagh in a singles match on May 5 RAW episode, WWE announced a rematch between Penta and Dominik for the title at Backlash.
