Ricochet Wins SmackDown World Cup, To Face Gunther on December 16
Ricochet defeated Santos Escobar to win the first-ever SmackDown World Cup on Fox on December 2, 2022, episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
Ricochet started the match with an upperhand but Escobar’s Legado Del Fantasma teammates, Cruz Del Toro and Joaquin Wilde ran interference for Escobar to get back in the match. The referee then booted both men from ringside along with Zelina Vega.
Escobar and Ricochet then showed off a tremendous back and forth match. In the end, Ricochet countered on the top rope to hit Escobar with a Frankestiener and a series of superkicks to set up 630-splash to get the pin.
The winner of the World Cup was to be awarded a shot at WWE Intercontinental Championship. Ricochet will get that match against reigning champion Gunther two weeks later on SmackDown’s 16 December episode.
Earlier, Escobar defeated Shinsuke Nakamura and Butch to get his spot in the final. Ricochet defeated Mustafa Ali and Braun Strowman on the way to finals.
