Dominik Mysterio Beats Wes Lee, Becomes NXT North American Champion

Dominik Mysterio has become the new NXT North American Champion on NXT July 18, 2023 episode after beating Wes Lee.

Judgment Day faction arrived to NXT last week and one of their acts was Dominik Mysterio challenging Wes Lee to defend NXT North American Championship against him. Lee, who had defended the title in several open challenge matches during his reign, readily accepted the match.

The match took place in the main event of July 18 NXT episode. Lee made a comeback in the second half of the match and had Dominik down in the ring. Just as he was getting ready for Kardiak kick, other Judgment Day members, Finn Balor and Damian Priest tried to interfere. Lee took care of both of them but Rhea Ripley hit him with her title belt behind the referee’s back. Dominik then capitalized by pinning Lee to win the title.

This is the first singles title win for Dominik Mysterio. He previously won SmackDown Tag Team Championship with his father, Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania Backlash 2021.

Dominik is the second member from Judgment Day to win this title. Damian Priest also won the title in 2020 when he was still in NXT. Dominik is also the second current champion from Judgment Day after Rhea Ripley who holds the Women’s World Championship.

Wes Lee is the longest reigning NXT North American Champion in a single title reign, with 270 days as the champion. He was supposed to defend the title against Mustafa Ali at NXT The Great American Bash 2023 PLE on July 30. It remains to be seen if that match changes or if Dominik defends the title against Ali only.
