Big E’s First Title Defense Set for Next Week SmackDown
WWE has confirmed Big E’s first WWE Intercontinental Championship defense for next week’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown.
Big E is set to defend his WWE Intercontinental title against Apollo Crews on 8 January 2020 episode of WWE SmackDown. The match was set in a backstage segment after Crews accepted an open challenge.
Big E defeated Sami Zayn on Christmas Edition of SmackDown last week to win the title for the second time. The storyline between them continued this week as Sami Zayn took a position with the commentary team during Big E’s match against King Baron Corbin.
As Big E hit Big Ending on Corbin, Sami attacked him to cause a disqualification. Corbin’s Knights of Lone Wolf- Cutler and Blake- joined Zayn in the attack. Apollo Crews then came out to make the save.
A tag team match between the teams of Big E & Apollo Crews and Sami Zayn & King Corbin followed this. Sami was left stranded by Corbin after some argument between them, and Crews finished the match with a spin-out powerbomb on Zayn.

Big E and Crews were then shown talking backstage when Kayla Braxton asked for the champion about how his title reign is gonna be. Big E responded by saying that he will be a fighting champion and announced an open challenge for next week.
Crews, who was standing beside the Intercontinental Champion, immidiately accepted the challenge. The segment ended with some tension between the two men. The title match was later confirmed by WWE.
