Chris Jericho(c) vs Cody Rhodes – AEW World Championship Match
We are heading to the main event with the hype video. Until then, let me revise the conditions for the match. The match is set for 60 minutes time limit. A panel of 3 judges is sitting down at the ringside to decide the match in case of the time-limit draw. The three judges are Arn Anderson, Dean Malenko, and The Great Muta. They are looking very indifferent to the match though and are given probably the worst seats at the ringside.
Cody Rhodes rises up with a platform from down under the stage. He heads to the ring and has MJF with him. They get inside the ring and amps up the crowd who are slowly coming to life. Cody goes out and meets his mother in the front row. Le Champion, the AEW World Champion Chris Jericho enters. And he has Jake Hager with him.
The crowd is chanting “Happy Birthday” for Jericho. Jericho comes out and tells Hager something to shut them down. They lock up briefly and before breaking. They do some locks and reversals before coming to a break again. They lock again and Jericho moves out of the ring to tell something to Hager once again. Cody with a headlock and its turned around by Jericho. Jericho is whipped to the rope and hits a shoulder tackle. Cody rocks him with an uppercut and Jericho moves out of the ring in anger. He gets into a stand-off with Dean Malenko before returning to the ring.
Waist lock from Cody is reversed by Jericho. Cody breaks the hold with some punches on Jericho’s hand but Jericho once again locks it down. Cody pushes him out of the ring and hits a suicide dive. A dropkick gets him two-count. He uses the rope to harm Jericho’s arm and follows with some chops. Cody continues to work on Jericho’s arm. Cody speeds up things now and hits a powerslam, follows it with a lariat to send him out of the ring and on the ramp. Jericho moves out of the way when Cody jumps on him. He cuts himself open in the dive and is bleeding. A doctor checks on him and cleans away the blood.
Jericho is in control now. After some work in the ring, Jericho dumps him to the outside. MJF and Jericho distract the referee and Jake Hager levels him on the outside. A suplex from Jericho when Cody tries to come back. The crowd is getting behind Cody. Cody hits some quick punches but Jericho hits him with a knee to take him down once again. Jericho is now working on his ribs now. Cody is cornered and Jericho keeps pounding on his ribs. Jericho whips him to another corner and Cody gets his boot up. Cody goes for the moonsault but Jericho moves away. Jericho has put him in the abdominal stretch after fending off his punches.
Cody powers out of it and slams Jericho to the mat. Jericho comes back immediately with a dropkick. Another stretch from Jericho but Cody powers out. He whips Jericho and goes for the dropkick. Jericho stays at the rope and Cody falls in the middle of the ring, back first. Cody gets his knees up on the springboard moonsault and hits a diamond cutter for a nearfall. Cody runs him down a clothesline and hits a series of punches. The disaster kick sends Jericho out of the ring. Cody goes out and Jericho kicks him in the midsection.
Jericho goes to taunt Cody’s mom and she slaps him back. Cody slams his face in the barricade and sends him back to the ring. Cody hits the Alabama slam for a near fall. A figure four from Cody has Jericho in trouble. But Jericho reverses it. Cody reaches the rope and when the referee was forcing Jericho to break the hold, Hager decks Cody. Hager gets on the apron and Cody tackles him down. The referee once again got distracted and Hager punches Cody. The referee realizes what was happening and boots Hager from the ringside. Hager sends MJF into the barricade on his way out. Jericho goes for the Judas effect but Cody counters it with the crossroads. 1-2… Jericho kicks out.
They are now trading strikes in the middle of the ring. Cody is coming out better in this exchange and hits an elbow to Jericho’s head. But he again gets a near fall only. Cody goes for the springboard and Jericho counters it with a codebreaker for a near fall. Jericho gets a few strikes going and unbuckles his belt. He lays out the belt on Cody until the referee yanks it from his hands. Jericho goes to the top and Cody hits him with the superkick there. Cody was going for the hurricanrana from there but Jericho has turned it around into the Liontamer. Cody is in trouble but gets to the rope. He rolls up Jericho into a cradle but gets only two. Jericho once again locks the Liontamer and stomps on Cody’s face a few times. He really lays into the move this time and MJF threw in the towel. The referee calls for the bell.
Winner- Chris Jericho
MJF is checking on Cody now after the bell. Jericho grabs the title and MJF asks him to leave Cody alone now. Jericho heads back and the Inner Circle comes out to celebrate with him at the ramp. MJF is almost in tears now as Cody gets up. They have some words in the ring and MJF hits a low blow on Cody. He is smiling now and as the crowd starts to chant a**hole to him. MJF heads back amid the boos from the crowd. Cody is looking stunned in the ring.
