EVENT NOTES
UFC announced on March 16, 2023, that they would return to Abu Dhabi, UAE, with UFC 294 PPV. It is UFC’s 17th event in Abu Dhabi and their 7th PPV event in the city.
UFC President Dana White announced on July 19, 2023, that Islam Makhachev would defend the lightweight title in a rematch against Charles Oliveira. On October 10, Dana White announced that Oliveira cut his eyebrows during a sparring session and required stitches. Oliveira was out of this event and Alexander Volkanovski came in as a short-notice replacement to face Makhachev instead.
Earlier, Paulo Costa and Ikram Aliskerov were announced to clash at UFC 291. However, the bout was canceled and both fighters were brought to UFC 294 card to face different opponents. Costa was booked against Khamzat Chimaev, while Aliskerov would face Nassourdine Imavov. Later, Imavov pulled out of the bout due to an injury. Warley Alves came in to replace Imavov in the bout. Costa also suffered an infection on his elbow and had to undergo surgery. When he was required to undergo two more surgeries, UFC pulled him from the event. Kamaru Usman then came in to replace him to face Chimaev.
Victor Henry and Javid Basharat were booked to clash at UFC Vegas 79 on September 23. But, Victor Henry pulled out with unspecified reasons. The bout was later booked for this event.
Viktoriia Dudakova and Jinh Yu Frey were set for strawweight bout in the women’s division. Viktoriia Dudakova missed weight for the fight with 117 lbs in the first attempt and 116.6 lbs behind the curtains. the bout was then turned into a catchweight bout.
Anshul Jubli and Mike Breeden were set for a lightweight bout on the card. Mike Breeden missed weight by 3.5 lbs and the bout was turned in a catchweight bout.
