Claressa Shields vs Maricela Cornejo

Claressa Shields got a new opponent just a few days before her undisputed middleweight title defense.

Hanna Gabriels who was originally scheduled to face Claressa Shields on June 3 is now out of this bout after testing positive for a banned substance in the VADA drug test within WBC’s Clean Boxing Programme.

As a result, Maricela Cornejo stepped up to fight and challenge Claressa Shields for the undisputed middleweight titles on June 3, 2023, in Detroit, Michigan. DAZN Boxing itself revealed this news.

Claressa Shields is regarded as one of the most dominant female boxers in the sport. She is still undefeated and is coming off a unanimous decision win against Savannah Marshall in October 2022.

On the other hand, Maricela Cornejo hasn’t stepped inside the ring for more than one and a half years. Cornejo lost 2 out of her last three matches. She is coming off a unanimous decision win against Miranda Barber in September 2021.

Claressa Shields aims to showcase her unmatched talent and technique against a new adversary, as she aims to solidify her dominance in the middleweight division.

Now, it remains to be seen whether Maricela Cornejo will be able to pull off the upset when she steps inside the ring against Claressa Shields on June 3.
