SYNOPSIS

Canelo Alvarez defended his undisputed Super Middleweight Championship(WBA, IBF, WBC & WBO) against interim WBO Super Middleweight Champion(and mandatory challenger) John Ryder. This was be Canelo’s second defense of the undisputed middleweight titles.

Canelo underwent hand surgery in October 2022 after his win over Gennadiy Golovkin, which was his first title defense of undisputed middleweight titles. This fight against Ryder was considered a tune-up fight for him before he could take on bigger names like Dmitry Bivol(rematch) or David Benavidez among others.

Canelo suffered just his second professional loss in May 2022 against Dmitry Bivol. He had since defeated Gennadiy Golovkin in their trilogy fight in September 2022. Ryder was on a 4-fight winning streak having beaten Mike Guy, Jozef Jurko, and Daniel Jacobs before beating Zach Parker to become interim WBO Super Middleweight champion.

This was the first fight for Canelo in Mexico since he defeated Kermit Cintrón in November 2011. The event was also part of 200-year celebrations of the state of Jalisco in Mexico. Promoted by Matchroom Boxing, the event aired on Dazn streaming worldwide and was a PPV event in US and Canada.
