Canelo Alvarez returned to super-middleweight division with a fight WBA(Super) & The Ring Super Middleweight Champion Callum Smith on December 19, 2020. He won the match via unanimous decision which also had the vacant WBC Super Middleweight title on the line. Alvarez later defended those titles against Anvi Yildirim and Billy Joe Saunders. The fight against Saunders also had the vacant WBO Super Middleweight title on the line.

Caleb Plant won the IBF Super Middleweight title back in January 2019 by defeating the reigning champion José Uzcátegui. He has since defeated Mike Lee(TKO), Vincent Feigenbutz(TKO), and Caleb Traux to successfully retain the title.

A fight between two champions is interesting due to multiple reasons. With WBA(Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, and the Ring – all super-middleweight titles will be on the line and the winner will be crowned as the first-ever undisputed Super Middleweight World Champion.

Plant has been undefeated in his 21 professional boxing fights and has been a champion for more than 30 months now. Canelo has also lost just one fight out of 57 while competing in several different weight classes.

Canelo is currently ranked as #1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world by ESPN, Box Rec, The Ring, TBRB, and Boxing Writers Association of America as well as the world’s best active super middleweight. Plant is ranked at #3 in the super-middleweight division by The Ring and TBRB, and #7 by Box Rec and ESPN.

After initial discussions, a deal was about to be completed between the two camps for September 18, 2021. However, the talks broke down and Canelo went into discussions for other fights. The talks were restarted with a projected fight for November 2021. Canelo announced on his Instagram page in August that the fight will take place on November 6, 2021.
